Most people arrive at a portrait session thinking about what to wear. That is reasonable. But the single biggest factor in how the photographs turn out is not the outfit. It is the timing. In southern Brazil, the golden hour arrives later than most people expect, and it lasts for less time than most photographers admit.
What golden hour actually means in practice ¶
The term gets used loosely. In photography, golden hour refers to the period after sunrise or before sunset when the sun is low enough that its light travels through more atmosphere, which warms the colour temperature and softens the shadows. In Curitiba in summer, this window starts around 17h45 and is largely over by 18h30. That is forty-five minutes. Sessions that begin at 16h spend the first hour in light that is technically fine but not particularly interesting.
How we plan the timing of every session ¶
Before any outdoor session, we check the sunset time for that specific date and location, then work backwards. For a forty-five-minute golden-hour window, we want to be in position and warmed up about twenty minutes before it starts. That means arriving at the location around 17h20 for a typical summer session in Curitiba. We tell clients this in the booking confirmation so there is no confusion on the day.
What to wear and what to avoid ¶
Warm tones photograph well in golden light. Terracotta, rust, cream, olive, and deep navy all hold their colour without competing with the sky. Bright white can blow out in direct sun. Busy patterns tend to distract from the face. The most important thing is to wear something you feel comfortable in, because discomfort reads in the body and no amount of good light fixes a tense shoulder.
What happens if the light does not cooperate ¶
Overcast days produce a different kind of portrait, not a worse one. The light is even, the shadows are soft, and the colours in clothing tend to be more saturated. Some of our favourite images have come from sessions on grey afternoons. If the weather is genuinely unusable, we reschedule without any extra charge. We would rather wait for the right conditions than deliver a gallery we are not proud of.
